Your opponent's much faster than you. (Be more careful about your position.)
You flinched. (Don't.)
Your shield position at guard protects less than you thought. (Rethink it.)
Your swordside foot is forward. (Make sure that your swordside foot's heel is on the ground. Make sure you're making complete returns.)
You are leaning forward when throwing blows. (Keep upright, centered and straight.)
IF YOU ARE HIT ON THE BACK OF THE HELM, CHECK TO SEE IF:
You need another place to block return blows to the head. (Get one.)
You failed to move while the opponent threw three blows. (Move.)
You failed to throw a blow while the opponent threw three blows. (Throw a blow.)
You failed to have your knees bent. (You cannot move the hips correctly with locked legs. Bend your knees.)

IF YOU ARE HIT ANYWHERE ON THE SWORDSIDE, CHECK TO SEE IF:
Your swordside shoulder is forward. (Make complete returns.)
Your swordside foot is forward. (Return to correct stance.)
You're fighting someone who is wrong-handed. (Always check to see which hand your opponent has the sword in.)
IF YOU ARE HIT ON THE LEG, CHECK TO SEE IF:
Your shield is too short for your body. (Get a new shield.)
Your leg block does not go to your knee. (Check your leg block in a mirror or with a partner.)
You are not bending your knees. (Bend your knees.)
Your sword shoulder is forward. (Make sure you are making proper returns.)
Your swordside foot is forward. (Make sure that your swordside foot's heel is on the ground. Make sure you're making complete returns.)
You are leaning forward when throwing blows. (Keep upright, centered and straight.)
Your shield is tabling (flying away from the leg) instead of straight to the knee. (Check your leg block in a mirror or with a partner.)
IF YOU ARE HIT ON THE SWORD ARM, CHECK TO SEE IF:
Your elbow is dropping on your blows. (Elbow up!)
Your returns are slow or looping. (Make sure that your hip is pulling your elbow, not vice versa.)
You threw a return blow from too far away. (Think about blow selection.)
